Inside a sealed case hangs a sheet of translucent material. It flows like fabric though it is solid, glows like amber, and catches light like glass. It is skin. Made by dissolving animal hide and allowing it to dry, the material reorganizes itself in response to heat, humidity, gravity, and the presence of other objects in its environment. Emergence draws on the idea that complex patterns arise from countless simple interactions. Just as collagen molecules become skin, and nebulas give birth to stars, this material forms something entirely new. Everything is a temporary arrangement of matter, continually dissolving and becoming. What will your matter become next?
