About

"The Hat" is a site-specific installation consisting of a hat suspended above a simple illuminated platform on the Black Rock Desert. At night, lighting creates a defined square of attention within the vast openness of the playa, inviting participants to approach, gather, and linger. This well-traveled installation – appearing previously on the playa every year since Larry Harvey's death as well as the BLM Field Office in Winnemucca - is a precisely cited installation that evokes and perpetuates the playa rumor that Larry Harvey was buried within the Black Rock Desert, and this installation marks the spot. The work encourages visitors to create their own narratives, share stories, and debate its meaning. 40°44'45.2"N 119°10'24.0"W
